Kate and Mike’s sound investment

Kate and Mike’s sound investment

Why did you choose solar?

“We had the capital to invest, and saw solar technology and the Feed-in-Tariff as a good way to make the money work for us.”

Challenge

Kate and Mike Jenns had spent much of their working lives as teachers and knowing that they would be spending more time at home during the day with their two chickens, two cats and a dog, Heidi, they wanted to take advantage of the electricity they generated. They also realised that without home renewables their electricity bills would be higher as they spent more time at home.

Solution

Going solar wasn’t a simple decision so before deciding to go ahead, Mike and Kate did their homework (no surprise for a pair of teachers) as they were concerned to make sure that the panels wouldn’t damage their roof and would provide a sound investment and in their first quarter they saw their electricity bill down by 40%

Simon’s solar installation

Simon Rowley’s conservation area installation

Challenge

The overriding concern with this project was adhering to the planning regulations for a conservation area. Other essential roof repairs were also needed during the installation.

Solution

Joju Solar applied for and obtained a government grant on behalf of Simon. Joju Solar executed the installation project in conjunction with other essential roof repairs, demanding a high level of project management and coordination. Joju Solar ensured that the PV system, was installed flush with the existing roof, adhering to conservation guidelines for Ealing. This type of system is ideal for anyone re-roofing or undertaking new building work.

“I just thought I should record at this stage how pleased I am with the job that you did for me. Thank you!”

A great investment for Chris

Chris Robbins best ever invest investment was solar

Why did you choose solar?

“I had been looking at getting a solar PV system fitted for a while to help reduce his electricity usage and to reduce my carbon footprint. After contacting Joju Solar a member of your Residential team came to visit my property to assess the suitability of my roof and to better understand my needs.”

Solution

After the site visit Chris decided to go ahead with a Sharp 245W PV panel installation. The final system design consisted of 10 Sharp 245W PV panels on a SB 2500 SMA inverter. The 2.45kW system will produce 2,060kWh per annum with a carbon saving of over 1.09 tonnes. Chris will be able to produce clean green electricity, future proof against rising energy costs and make savings on his electricity bills.

“Apart from the bees’ nest in the roof – which wasn’t Joju Solar’s fault everything was done very smoothly with little disruption. The panels are generating even more than was promised. This is probably the best investment I have made – much better than I was getting from the bank.”

Ashok’s Birthday Solar

Ashok Patel’s birthday solar installation

Why did you choose solar?

“I wanted to reduce reliance on electricity from the grid and reduce my energy bills. After researching solar I decided it would not only reduce my electricity bills, but it would also be a good investment to leave to my family for the future.”
Challenge

To install the largest system possible on the roof space available and complete the installation for Ashok’s birthday as planned.

Solution

Understanding the customer’s requirements and objectives are important to ensure the best system and that it meets the customer’s expectations. Joju Solar worked closely with Ashok and designed a system to maximise the capacity given the limited roof space available. Savings on electricity bills and a decrease in reliance on electricity from the grid allowed Ashok to future proof against rising energy costs. Ashok was pleased with his system and very happy to have his legacy to pass onto his children, but most of all Ashok enjoyed that the installation was completed on his 76th birthday.

“I am very happy with my new solar PV system. After speaking to many other solar companies I was very impressed with the way Joju Solar answered all my questions. They gave me the exact system I was after and the installation was completed without any problems.”

Nicky’s Grand Design

Nicky Michaels’ dream house was featured in Grand Designs Magazine

Why Did You Choose Solar?

“Being eco-friendly was really important to the house build and we knew that solar panels were going to play a part in helping us keep our carbon footprint down and ensure that our home really was an eco-home. We also had to make sure that any renewable technologies we put in would not impact our design. This was absolutely critical.”

Challenge

We had to design and install a system that not only provided Nicky and her husband Tony with the maximum generation from their system but also kept to the restrictions of being in a conservation area. The first system was installed in 2007 and was completed through the grants available from the government.

Nicky and Tony decided that they wanted another system installed so they could take advantage of the Feed-in Tariff. The second installation required us to move the first system and put the new system in its place, as this would allow the system to generate the most electricity being in the ideal location in terms of pitch and direction.

Solution

We dealt with several obstacles by creating our own bespoke ballasted mounting system and arranging our installation around glass ceilings, a green roof and restrictive planning position. The two systems have provided Nicky and Tony with electricity to power their dream home whilst also being able to take advantage of the Feed-in Tariff. The Michaels’ home was even featured on the cover of Grand Design Magazines.

“Joju Solar provided a great service with both installs. Service was good, the system was installed and working from day one”

Metropolitan Police Training Centre

Metropolitan Police Specialist Training Centre receives specialist solar installation

Challenge

The Metropolitan Police wanted to help meet their carbon reduction targets and at the same time generate a long term revenue stream. The installation had to be completed within an extremely tight timeframe within a very complicated live operational environment: the riot police training facility is located beside the installation roof site.

Solution

Joju Solar are live environment retrofit specialists and were able to carry out this installation without any impact on the site’s operations. Our expert project management skills ensured that the project was installed on time and to budget. A  118 kWp system was installed consisting of  529 Sharp 240W Polycrystalline modules and multiple Solarmax inverters across two separate profiled metal roofs at the Training Centre in Gravesend. The system was mounted on a bespoke aluminium racking system especially designed by Joju Solar. The installation time was just two weeks.

“The construction process was well-planned and safely executed and the installations were completed within budget and to exacting timescales.” Martin Jameson, Compliance Director, John Laing Integrated Services.

Oxford University Engineering Department

Oxford University, Engineering Department receives expert Solar PV engineering

Challenge

Oxford University is one of Europe’s most innovative and entrepreneurial universities. They wanted to design and install a PV solar energy system that could help provide students with a more effective way of studying renewable energy. At the same time the system had to be fitted on the roof of the engineering department without penetrating the roof membrane and invalidating the roof’s warranty. Joju also had to integrate the solar energy monitoring system with the department’s existing IT infrastructure.

Solution

The project required a certain amount of innovation  in order to secure the panels onto the flat roof flat roof without fixing them to the building. The problem was solved by instead using ballasted buckets. Joju Solar also obtained a 40% grant for the installation from the government, on behalf of the client.

Benefits

Through the 1.36kWp system the University gained an invaluable teaching aid that is used for students across various courses, helping them to understand first hand PV and microgeneration, and helping support its reputation as a world class leader in technology and environmental research. The photovoltaic (PV) system will pay for itself within its guaranteed lifetime.

Wey Valley Schools

Community funded installations for secondary schools in Southern England

The Wey Valley Solar Schools (WVSSC) Co-operative is a community-owned energy co-operative set up by local people from the towns of Guildford and Godalming in Surrey. A 2011 share offer raised £625,000 from individual investors to put solar panels on the roofs of six state secondary schools in Surrey. The addition of a subsequent site gave an initial total generation capacity of 267kW over seven schools. Investor members have so far received annual returns of over 7%.

The Co-operative provides schools with:

  •       renewable energy free of charge or at a heavily discounted rate
  •       the ability for each school to cut their carbon emissions by up to about 20 tonnes per year
  •       an educational package to explain and monitor the renewable energy being generated by each school

In 2015 WVSSC made a second share offer to raise between £200,000- 250,000 to fund substantial extensions to solar installations at Godalming College and Beacon School of up to 285 kW, more than doubling the generating capacity of the Co-operative.

Joju Solar were delighted to be chosen by Wey Valley Solar Schools as the preferred contractor for this ongoing project and have worked closely with them to deliver their installations. We also provide monitoring and maintenance for the solar systems helping ensure that they continue to get the most energy and best financial returns across their whole portfolio.

Testimonial

“Wey Valley Solar Schools have used Joju Solar on numerous installations. They have been excellent and I recommend them. They have compared very favourably indeed with the other contractors of which I have experience. They have plenty of experience in dealing with sensitive sites (e.g. schools) and working around operating sites. They are completely aligned to the community energy movement and to find this together with technical expertise has been a real joy. Their quotes are firm and contain no hidden extras. They are easy to work with and very supportive because we are all trying to deliver the same mission.” Mike Smyth, Director, Wey Valley Solar Schools
