Feed-in-tariff

So how does it make money?

It’s not just about being green. Going solar now brings really significant financial benefits and there really has never been a better time for earning money from your roof.

How can my roof make me money? It’s all about ‘units of electricity’. Oh, and something called ‘the Feed-in-tariff’. (We didn’t chose the name and we wish they had just called it The Clean Energy Cashback Scheme, which is much easier to understand).

A ‘unit of electricity’ is the same as the ‘unit of electricity’ that you normally get billed for in your electricity bill. You normally pay your electricity company for each ‘unit’ (usually about 12p or so) that you use. However, with solar panels the electricity company pays you for each ‘unit’ you produce (even if you use it!).  As if that wasn’t enough you also get paid an extra little bit for the electricity that you don’t use (perhaps because you are on holiday or out of the house all day).

So, that means that there are three financial benefits:

1. The money you save for all the electricity you produce and don't have to buy

2. The money you get paid for producing solar electricity

3. The money you get paid for selling electricity back to the grid when you don't need it

This all adds up to quite a lot and means that you will usually earn back the value of your system in about ten years (the exact length of time depends on the size of your system and how much energy it produces). We will give you an estimate when we produce a quote for you.
